Ufortunately I am too young to have met him, but in the future I should get a chance to meet his Son Soke Kozo Kuniba.

  2. mobiusII says:

Was that 1990 tournament in Sylvester Ga? I was a member of the IKKU at that time under Soke Ruiz (He became Hanshi at that tournament) and was there.

  3. konafied says:

Soke was my instructor, from begining to end, and I miss him.
Soke’s greatest teaching was that karate was about family. If you trained with him, you know his family was in the dojo. He was as a father to me.
As far as bunkai goes…Soke taught us how to think for ourselves. And that one movement did not have only one meaning. Shito Ryu is a living style that has the ability to change. He encouraged us to experiment with new bunkai.
Thank you for the video. He was the best.

    I live in Weslaco! :D
I’ve been studying this style for seven years now. I never got to meet Shogo Kuniba though, but I have met Soke Price.

  6. PuzzledPossum says:

Yes Shogo Kuniba is that Soke. I had the good fortune of being a student at his Hombu dojo when he started developing the Goshin-do kata. I learned the first two before I moved away … one of the few times in my life I was in the right place at the right time!

He’d be happy to know you thought his karate was good ;)

When I made my statements earlier, I was not refering that the bunkai I learned (being different than what is being shown on this u-tube post) was what I learned in my studies of Shitoryu. My current teacher is who turned me on to the bunkai that’s extremly different than what I learned in my Shitoryu studies. His line of study comes from Hohan Soken Family. I met J. Semmes in 1990 at Soke Ruiz tourny. If I may I ask you for your email address. And I know Kuniba-sensei was good at his karate.

  9. PuzzledPossum says:

I stated clearly I studied with Kuniba for a couple (2) years – I reached ikkyu. For me to say I was taught what Kuniba taught dans 1 through 8 would be silly, as would thinking that your teachers, much less yourself, were taught all that he knew.

Contact Shihan J. Semmes, Jr., (NKJU). (It was he, through a mutual acquantance, that turned me onto this realm of kata on YouTube.) Get his scoop on me, ask him for my email address, and we can quit boring the internet with this. Mark K.

Ha Ha Ha….not sure what u mean from the first part, but I get the hint. Still did not answer my last post questions though. I have learned over the years that when someone cant answer a question asked to them, instead of saying they dont know, they start grasping at air and spill out quirky little sayings to avoid giving an answer that might show they truely dont know.

  11. PuzzledPossum says:

In through nose and out through your mouth, my friend … but do you truly feel that the entirety of what Kuniba knew was transferred to you?

I had the honor of meeting Baillargeon-sensei, may he rest in peace, at the dojo in Portsmouth. My shotokan sensei (may he rest in peace) studied on occasion with Baillargeon-sensei. Happy Holidays to you and yours. Mark K.

  12. roningb says:

Was any of the 20 or so bunkai for gedan barai done on the ground or on your back? Did he show any kansetsu-waza or shime-waza with the gedan barai? Did Kuniba teach the kyusho-jitsu or tuite aspects of kata bunkai? Did he teach the 5 element theory with his bunkai? No he did not. Bunkai is not for you to figure out. Its for you to learn the proper meaning. I studied under baillargeon and one of his students & they did not teach that so I know Kuniba did not know it.

  13. REspinosa3 says:

Can anyone tell me if this is the soke who developed Goshin-do Kara-te? and if this person was around 5′0 – 5′4 in hight?

  14. 1motiger says:

Yes I saw him several times their in Weslaco about 20yrs ago awesome soke

  15. roberant says:

That is definitely soke kuniba demonstrating w/the help of a YOUNG soke price. Crazy seeing this after so many years… Only got to meet soke kuniba once during a camp at my cousin raul cantu’s dojo in weslaco, tx…last time I saw soke price was prbly more than 10 yr ago… *sigh*

  16. PuzzledPossum says:

What !? If he breaks the man’s knee, does that make it Okinawan? Bunkai have no nationality. I trained with Soke Kuniba at his honbu dojo in Portsmouth, VA for a couple years – he always stressed that the kata are from those who went before, the bunkai are left to those who come after to figure out. It is said this was Kuniba’s area of genius – I remember a class where he showed what must have been 20 bunkai for gedan barai. We ran out of time before he ran out of bunkai. Mark K.

  17. W5BAK says:

I had the honor of training with Soke Kuniba at the Florence School of Karate in Florence, SC. I went to VA in 1980 or 1981 and placed second in a tournament, just 18 years old. I am thrilled to see this video and others on the net.

Such power and control, awesome. Osu.

  19. roningb says:

Kuniba once said that as a young boy in his father’s dojo, Mabuni came and taught kata only, no bunkai, so in later years Kuniba had to develop his own bunkai. This is not true Shitoryu bunkai from Okinawa Kuniba is demostrating….it’s Japanese bunkai or karate-do, a watered down version of karate-jutsu. He did alot for karate in Japan and the US, but it’s not Okinawa karate in its true form.
